Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment intended to improve skin hydration, suppleness and elasticity. It may suit someone whose main concern is dry-looking, crepey or mildly lax skin. It is less suited to a goal such as adding substantial cheek volume, changing facial proportions or removing excess skin.
Understanding how Profhilo works starts with that distinction: the aim is a gradual improvement in skin quality. Treatment should begin with a consultation to assess whether this matches your concerns, your skin and your medical history.
How does Profhilo work?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body that binds water. Classic Profhilo contains a combination of high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. According to manufacturer IBSA Germany, a 2 ml syringe contains 64 mg of hyaluronic acid in total.
The formulation is stabilised through a thermal process and does not use the chemical crosslinking agent BDDE. Its relatively fluid consistency allows it to spread through the treated tissue. This differs from a firmer hyaluronic acid filler selected to add volume or define a particular contour.
“Bioremodelling” is a term used to describe the treatment’s intended effects on skin quality. It is not a measure of how much visible change you will get. Hydration, elasticity and facial lifting are different outcomes and should be discussed separately.
What results can you realistically expect?
Profhilo treatment aims to improve hydration, elasticity and skin texture. A suitable result may be subtle: the skin looks or feels more supple, rather than the face taking on a noticeably different shape.
Clinical research offers some support for improved hydration, although the evidence has limitations. An open-label study published online in 2025 enrolled 30 Chinese women aged 38–60, treated them twice four weeks apart and followed them to week 12. Open-label means the patients and researchers knew which treatment was given.
The study found improvements in superficial hydration and water loss through the skin, but it had no untreated comparison group. Hydration measurements involved only a small subset, and not all measured outcomes improved significantly. Two authors worked for IBSA. These findings do not establish a predictable degree of lifting or how long an individual result will last.
For pronounced sagging, deep folds or substantial volume loss, a consultation may identify a different approach. Before agreeing to treatment, describe the change you want in concrete terms, such as less crepey cheek skin, so the clinician can explain whether Profhilo is a reasonable match.
Who may be suitable for Profhilo?
Suitability depends on the condition of your skin, your expectations and an individual medical assessment. Age alone is not a useful way to decide.
Profhilo may be worth discussing if you:
- Want to improve hydration and the appearance of fine, crepey skin.
- Have mild skin laxity and would be satisfied with a gradual, subtle change.
- Prefer a treatment focused on skin quality rather than a specific increase in volume.
- Understand that an initial course, review appointments and possible maintenance may be needed.
Tell the clinician about your health conditions, allergies, medicines and supplements, previous injectable treatments, and any current skin infection or inflammation. Pregnancy or breastfeeding should also be disclosed before planning treatment. The clinician should check the relevant product instructions and decide whether to proceed, postpone treatment or suggest an alternative.
Do not stop prescribed medication to reduce bruising without speaking to the clinician who manages it.
What happens during a Profhilo appointment?
Consultation and treatment planning
The consultation should establish the area to be treated and the result you hope to achieve. Your clinician assesses the skin, discusses limitations and risks, and explains the proposed course. Ask which product is being used, how many sessions are planned and what the quoted fee includes.
Preparation and injections
The treatment area is cleansed and disinfected. Any numbing options can be discussed beforehand. The clinician then places the product at selected injection points according to the treatment plan and the appropriate product technique.
A Profhilo appointment takes around 30 minutes, although the time needed can vary. You may feel brief stinging or pressure during injections. Small raised areas at the injection sites can be visible afterwards, and tenderness, redness or bruising may occur.
Aftercare and review
Before leaving, you should receive instructions covering skin care, make-up, exercise, heat exposure and when to contact the clinic. Follow the timing given for your treatment rather than relying on a generic online aftercare schedule.
Avoid rubbing or massaging injection sites unless your clinician specifically instructs you to do so. A review helps assess the response and decide whether further treatment is appropriate.
How many sessions are needed, and when do results appear?
A typical initial course of classic Profhilo involves two sessions one month apart. Maintenance may be considered around six months after the first treatment, depending on the response. The schedule should be adjusted to your skin and treatment goals.
Results develop gradually, and the timing can vary:
- Early changes: some improvement may become noticeable within one to two weeks.
- Assessment of the fuller response: approximately four to eight weeks after completing the initial two-session course.
- Duration: benefits may last around six to nine months, with variation between patients.
These timing estimates are not guaranteed outcomes. Skin condition, treatment area and individual response can affect what you notice and how long it lasts. The small, short-term study discussed above does not establish a precise duration of benefit.
At follow-up, compare your skin with photographs taken under consistent lighting and discuss whether the improvement meets your goals. Further treatment should have a clear purpose rather than being booked automatically.
What are the risks and side effects?
Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising and small injection-site bumps can occur. Even when the treatment fits easily into a working day, visible marks may remain afterwards. Allow flexibility around important events.
Less common problems can include infection, persistent lumps or inflammatory and allergic reactions. Injectable treatments also carry a rare risk of vascular complications if blood flow is affected. The fact that hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body does not make an injection risk-free.
Get urgent medical assessment for severe or increasing pain, unusually pale or discoloured skin, or other concerning changes after treatment. Sudden visual disturbance requires emergency medical care; in Germany, call 112. Do not wait for a routine follow-up appointment or a reply to an online booking request.
For redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness that is worsening rather than settling, contact the treating clinic promptly. Ask before treatment how to reach the clinical team if a problem develops outside normal opening hours.
How does Profhilo compare with other injectables?
- Classic Profhilo focuses on hydration and skin quality, with possible improvements in mild laxity.
- Contour-focused hyaluronic acid fillers are selected to add targeted volume or definition.
- Botulinum toxin reduces activity in selected muscles and is used for suitable movement-related lines.
These treatments address different concerns. Combining procedures is not automatically necessary or beneficial; each should have a clear purpose in an individual plan.
Is Profhilo Structura the same treatment?
No. Profhilo Structura is a separate option aimed at selected superficial facial fat compartments and contour-related concerns. Classic Profhilo focuses primarily on skin quality. The products and treatment techniques should not be treated as interchangeable.
Evidence about classic Profhilo cannot simply be applied to Structura. If a quotation or treatment recommendation says only “Profhilo,” ask the clinician to clarify the exact product and why it suits your concern.
Frequently asked questions
Will Profhilo make my face look fuller?
Classic Profhilo is not primarily intended to create targeted facial volume. Temporary swelling may make the treated area look fuller initially. If your goal is to restore cheek volume or change a contour, explain that during the consultation so the options can be assessed.
Can Profhilo replace a facelift?
It cannot remove excess skin or reproduce surgical repositioning of tissue. A possible improvement in hydration or mild laxity is a different outcome from correcting pronounced sagging.
Can one session be enough?
Your response and treatment plan are individual, but the usual initial approach involves two sessions. Ask about the complete course and review process before comparing prices for single appointments.
How do I decide whether to book?
Start with a Profhilo consultation to discuss your skin concerns, medical history and expectations. A useful treatment plan should explain the exact product, likely degree of improvement, session schedule, total expected cost and arrangements for follow-up. That gives you a practical basis for deciding whether Profhilo fits your goals.
