Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose towards the corners of the mouth and are a natural part of facial anatomy. As they deepen, the shadows they create can make the face look tired or strained. Carefully placed hyaluronic acid can soften pronounced hollows while preserving the natural transition from the cheek to the mouth area and your facial expression.

Nasolabial Folds consultation

Treatment overview

Before treatment, we assess why the nasolabial fold appears particularly pronounced. Skin quality, changes in cheek volume and the soft tissues in the area can all contribute.

Depending on our assessment, we may place hyaluronic acid directly into suitable parts of the fold or also address genuine volume loss in the midface. Cheek filler is not automatically necessary and does not always replace direct treatment of the fold.

Our aim is to soften the contour, not to erase the natural line that appears when you smile. Too much product beside the mouth can make the area look heavy or puffy, so we use carefully limited amounts.

Nasolabial Folds treatment

When might this treatment be suitable?

Treatment may be suitable if the folds between the nose and mouth are clearly visible even at rest and you would like the transition to look softer.

We assess whether targeted volume replacement is appropriate or whether reduced skin elasticity and sagging tissue are the main causes. If there is more significant laxity, an additional or alternative treatment may be more suitable. Existing filler is also taken into account to avoid unnecessary accumulation of material.

Nasolabial Folds safety

Safety and tolerability

Serious complications are rare. Important blood vessels run through the nasolabial area, and a vascular complication can cause permanent tissue damage or visual impairment. We discuss these risks with you personally.

Unusual or increasing pain, pale or mottled skin, or changes in vision require immediate medical assessment. Do not wait for a follow-up appointment or a reply from the clinic.

If an unexpected change occurs, we arrange the necessary care and support you through the next steps.

Treatment process

We assess the fold together with the cheek and the movement of the mouth area.

Preparation and aftercare

Before the treatment

Tell us about any medical conditions, allergies, medications and previous filler treatments. Please also mention herpes, inflammation around the mouth or nose, and any current or planned dental treatment. We postpone treatment if there is an acute infection or inflamed skin. Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

After the treatment

At first, avoid vigorous rubbing, facial massage and strong pressure on the treated areas. Do not try to flatten any lumps you can feel by pressing on them yourself. We will give you personalised advice on skincare, exercise, sauna use and significant heat exposure. Mild swelling or tenderness can occur initially. Unusual pain or abnormal skin discolouration requires immediate medical assessment.

Results

The fold often looks softer immediately after treatment. Early swelling can make the correction appear more pronounced at first. We reassess the result once swelling has settled, often after around two weeks. Longevity varies from person to person. Your body breaks down hyaluronic acid at its own rate, while changes in tissue, facial movement and body weight can also affect the appearance. Lifestyle factors influence skin quality, and the product, amount and placement also play a role. We recommend a top-up only after reassessing the treated area. A natural fold that remains visible does not automatically mean that more filler is needed.

Prices

Before treatment, we discuss whether treating the fold directly is sufficient or whether other areas should also be considered.

Costs may vary depending on the product, amount required and agreed combination of treatments. We confirm the total price before treatment begins.

Answers to your questions about nasolabial folds, treatment and aftercare.

We place hyaluronic acid in suitable areas to soften the hollow and its shadow. Whether the fold itself is treated directly or cheek volume loss should also be addressed is decided after assessment.

The appointment takes around 30–60 minutes. A change is often visible immediately. Once swelling has settled, usually after about two weeks, the true degree of correction can be assessed more accurately.

The injection may be briefly uncomfortable; local anaesthetic can be used if needed. Swelling, bruising or tenderness may follow. How long these effects last varies, and we cannot guarantee that they will settle within one to three days.

Treatment may be suitable when pronounced nasolabial folds are bothersome even at rest and targeted volume replacement is appropriate. Afterwards, follow our care advice and avoid strong pressure and massage at first.

We remain available if you have questions about your recovery. Unusual pain, skin discolouration or changes in vision require immediate medical assessment.

Downtime and Swelling

Downtime and Swelling

Swelling, bruising and tenderness can last for several days and occasionally longer. The area beside the mouth may initially look a little fuller. Allow enough time before important events.

Possible side effects

Possible side effects

Mild local reactions usually settle on their own. Less commonly, persistent swelling, nodules, infection or delayed inflammatory reactions can occur. Visible unevenness or overcorrection may also require reassessment. If changes persist or worsen, contact us. Please do not firmly massage the treated areas yourself.

Combination Options

Combination Options

If there is also volume loss in the cheeks, coordinated treatment of the midface may be appropriate. We then reassess how much direct correction of the nasolabial fold is still needed. A general 'lifting effect' from cheek filler cannot be guaranteed. If there are also fine etched skin lines, a suitable treatment to improve the skin surface may be helpful. The appropriate method and timing depend on your skin type and our assessment. Botulinum toxin is not a standard treatment for nasolabial folds. The surrounding muscles are important for smiling and upper-lip movement, so any treatment of these muscles requires a separate, carefully considered clinical reason.

Why DIVINE Medica >

DIVINE Medica Munich clinic interior

Not every deep nasolabial fold needs as much filler as possible. What matters is why the fold has developed and which correction will genuinely improve the transition.

  • We therefore assess the fold together with the surrounding tissues. We take care to preserve natural movement around the mouth and a natural contour. If a staged approach or combination treatment is more appropriate, we explain why.
  • Distinguishing between a fine skin line and a deeper tissue fold
  • Assessment of how the fold relates to the cheek area
  • Targeted treatment of the sections that are genuinely pronounced
  • Conservative volume planning without unnecessary fullness
  • Clear information about costs and aftercare
  • Personal support and medical follow-up
